今天是端午节，大家都吃了什么馅儿的粽子呢？回味之余，我们来聊聊英语里经常用来表示“节日、假期”的几个词。

一般来说，节日性质不同，英文中的说法也就不一样。

先从最常见的day说起，为特定人群设定的节日叫day，一般纪念或表达感情的色彩比较重。比如：Teachers' Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Children's Day等，这种节日一般不放假。如果愿意，你可以给过节的人送些小礼物。当然啦，April Fool's Day 是另类，这种时候你可以拿别人开涮，被捉弄的人也不会跟你真的生气。

Festival这个词更强调具有传统意义的节日。在这样的节日里，人们会举行庆祝活动，享受节日的美好。所以，说festival是最有气氛的节日毫不为过。

如果连着好几天不用上学或者上班，通常跟国家的法定节日连在一起的假期，我们就叫它holiday，比如：国庆假期（the National Day holiday）、圣诞假期(Christmas holiday)、春节假期（the Spring Festival holiday）等，国家法定的公共假期就是public holidays。所以，一般来说，holiday的时间相对较短，比如：What did you do during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday?（你端午假期干啥了？）

但是，在英式英语中，holiday的意思跟美式英语中的vacation意思相当，都可以表示各类悠长假期，学生们的寒暑假在英国是winter/summer holidays，在美国就是winter/summer vacation。

在美式英语中，vacation多用来表示“（不用工作/上学的）假期”，通常时间较长，不一定跟什么节日相关，用作动词或名词皆可，比如：They planned to vacation in Hawaii（他们计划去夏威夷度假），They went to Europe on vacation（他们去欧洲度假了）；I've still got some vacation time left before the end of the year（我年底前还有一些假没休完）。外出度假的人就是vacationer，在英式英语中就成了holidaymaker，比如：This island is an attractive destination for vacationers/holidaymakers（这个岛对度假人士很有吸引力）。
