On a hillside covered with dandelions lived a little hedgehog named Diandian. He had seven special spines on his back, shining in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple—just like a rainbow in the sky. But Diandian was lonely, because all the little animals in the forest thought his spines were too strange and no one wanted to play with him.

One day, dark clouds gathered, and it was about to rain heavily. The birds in the forest cried anxiously, for their nest was shaking violently in the wind and would fall down at any moment. The little squirrel hid in a tree hole holding pinecones, and the little rabbit huddled under a mushroom umbrella, shivering with cold. Diandian saw how worried everyone was. Even though no one usually played with him, he still wanted to help.

Diandian remembered his mother saying that his rainbow spines were very strong. So he ran to the big tree, carefully hooked the edge of the bird’s nest with his spines, and slowly held it steady. The birds thanked him gratefully: “Thank you, Diandian!” At that moment, the little squirrel jumped out of the tree hole, holding a leaf and shouting, “I’ll keep you from getting wet."

The rain stopped, the sun came out, and a beautiful rainbow hung in the sky. The little animals sat around Diandian.
