而我呢?除了认得英语的二十六个字母和简单的、不超过五十个的单词外,什么都不会了。为此,我的阅读范围,也仅限于读译著,不能品味原著风采,那感觉多少像吃别人嚼过的东西,在恶心之中,很是遗憾!

这样的遗憾,让我想起四十多年前我学英语的情况。我记得刚上初中那会儿,先是因一个“反潮流”人的影响,即“我是中国人,为什么要学外文,不学ABC照样当好接班人”的抗议,后来又不知怎么回事又要学英语了。但学也是“三天打鱼两天晒网”,闹着玩似的,我们的语文老师甚至说“学那玩意儿干啥?更里港浪的(方言,意同叽哩哇啦),今后升学考试又不考!”

但是,教育局有要求,学校还得敷衍,就临时安排老师兼课教我们的英语。仿佛记得,整个初中几年中,教我们英语的老师都有好几个,也好像我们根据每个老师的长相、教学态度等都给他们取了相应的外号,有两个比较鲜活,一曰:白猫儿;二曰:猪头小队长。

最让我难忘的,还是一位和我同村的老师,以及他教我们英语的神态。

这位老师姓P,估计大我六七岁的光景,他在我们村小当学生时就是品学兼优,以至于教我们的老师经常以他为榜样勉励我们,我是未见其人,先闻其大名,真如《水浒传》那句“如雷贯耳”的话。他高中毕业回乡务农,什么原因没升学,不知道。但我知道,在我们学校缺老师时,他就到我们学校来了,先当代课老师,后当上了民办教师。

上个世纪七十年代初,在我们川北农村学校的师资力量大概是这样的,一个学校有几位公办教师,其余的就是民办教师。这些民办教师多数是初中毕业教小学,高中毕业教初中,也有小学毕业教小学,初中毕业教初中的,有现炒现卖的嫌疑,也有一边自学一边教的励志。当教师在那个年代除了军人外,最令人羡慕,能当上民办教师者,绝非都是品学兼优者,因为农村关系复杂,所以这里不好评论。

因为没有专门的英语、体育教师,教我们英语、体育的老师多是“客串”一把而已。比如,被临时安排来教我们英语的P老师,他本是教高年级物理的老师。

P老师令我四十几年仍经常想起他的原因,主要有三个方面。

一是听说P老师是个孝子。据我当时的同村同班同学说,P老师的父亲英年早逝,他当年去区中学读书时,每周回学校前都要毕恭毕敬、乖乖巧巧地给他母亲梳好头再走。我当时听了,觉得很稀奇,一个大男孩给母亲梳头,那得多大的耐心啊!况且,P老师上有两个哥哥,下有一个弟弟(和我是小学同班同学),怎么都轮不到他去梳,可见他的孝顺!后来我想,P老师梳头的样子一定很滑稽。因为,P老师个头矮壮、手指头粗短,做事前喜欢噘嘴皮,他一手握梳子,一手握母亲的头发,认真而且细致的动作,一定很搞笑。至于后来P老师是否还一直给他母亲梳头,或者梳到什么时候,就不知道了,我初中毕业后就很少见到他了。因为P老师的这种属于孝子的行为,乡村的男女老少都乐意免费为他宣扬,故令我难忘。


二是P老师上课很特别。我之所以用“特别”两字来形容P老师的上课,那是因为他上课时,一声音特别洪亮,声震屋梁,有如铜号,远播校外,有时可以盖过别的班级的集体朗读声;二板书特别快,而且字如其人,粗壮、劲蹦,偌大一块黑板,仅够他书写三五行,因为个头原因,黑板有一尺开外够不着,再加上他写的比讲的多,故不得不快写又快擦掉,因此,听他的课,笔记作慢了的话,根本记下来,但他都一边擦一边问:“记下来没有?记完没有?我擦,我擦咯?快点嘛!”;三写字特别卖力,P老师和别的老师大不同,别人带一枝粉笔,或者捡几个粉笔头就能把一堂四十五分钟的课上完,他不行,他自己每堂课必带整整一盒粉笔来,有时还不够用,还要学生到他办公室去拿,仿佛粉笔和他有仇似的,要竭力损耗它们。有一次,P老师喊我去拿,因为我个子矮小坐在最前排,我想到都快下课了,就只拿了一枝粉笔。P老师立刻训斥我道:“多拿几根要累死你吗?”


故尔,P老师一堂课上下来,不但他自己像从面粉箩篼里跳出来一般,前三排的学生粉笔灰也都吃饱了。

P老师写在黑板上的字,不像是手写上去的,而像是用刻刀刻出来的“阳刻”字模般古丁暴绽的。

看P老师上课的样子倒是很享受。只见他右手像握锄头一样死死捏住粉笔,左手握黑板刷,咬牙切齿地埋头在黑板上板书,不时回头看看讲桌上的教材,再因为个子粗短,感觉他上课比在农田里劳动还费力,揎衣拽袖,冬天都是满头大汗,夏天更是挥汗如雨,像和人干了一场猛仗,又像挑了二三百斤的担子走了几十里的山路。听P老师上课,你不认真,或者注意力不集中都不行。


当然,一堂课下来,P老师的样子也很狼狈,除了不停地吐嘴巴里和擤鼻子里的粉笔灰外,就是使劲拍打自己身上的粉笔灰。常听年长的老师感慨地说:“唉,这娃,上课比他妈的当农民还辛苦啊!”

但那时的P老师也就二十岁上下,给人朝气蓬勃,斗志昂扬,浑身上下都绑了炸药般有劲的感觉。

三是P老师教英语也很特别。P老师教我们英语,可能是大家都没有课本的缘故,他也没有教材,一进教室一不教单词,二不教语法,直接板书一个句子在黑板上,教我们跟他读,并要我们背下来,下一堂课他抽问。至今记得两句,一句是“工人和农民是我们的好老师”,我记住了这句英语的谐音“瓦儿扣俺得P老师”,另一句是“我们为革命而学习英语”,谐音是“我是他的英国女婿,虎惹为吾儿鲁迅”。后来,我上高中时,因为高考要考又恶补,但因为基础太差,对拼音和语法中的什么过去将来式尤搞不懂,如坠九霄云外,自然就没了兴趣。


后来,听说P老师考上了公办教师,又因为教书认真而被调到我县教育局,从事教育管理而不再教书育人了。

马上又该到一年一度的教师节了,而今,我已年近花甲,P老师如果还健在的话,估计也该古稀之年了。我想,P老师那认真敬业的教书劲头,只要当过他学生的人,终生都不会忘记他。
