这一章的大部分篇幅是在写达力怎么过11岁生日。佩妮姨妈夫妇日常如何宠溺达力，又如何为他准备了37件生日礼物，而达力如何任性、无礼甚至跋扈。如此鲜明强烈的对比，罗琳正是为了让读者的眼睛转向寄人篱下的哈利的孤独苦涩。

哈利住在楼梯下爬满蜘蛛的储物间，只能穿着达力的松松垮垮的旧衣服，每天被佩妮姨妈的催促声叫醒，到厨房打杂。环顾四周，这个“家”的装饰布置中完全没有他在此居住的迹象，可怜的哈利，在这个什么都不缺的“家”里，他缺乏吃穿，缺乏关爱，缺乏欢乐，这是多么灰暗的童年。
